Name of Assignment: Method Cards Subject: Senior Seminar Facilitator/Teacher: Mrs. Hendricks
Description of Work/Assignment: For this assignment I had to come up with 5 “method cards.” Each card includes 5 qualitative and 5 quantitative questions. Each card has a topic that relates to helping me narrow down my senior project by asking my target audience, high schoolers and young adults. So far I have completed one of my five interviews in which I ask the questions on the cards, and the data is just about what I had exptected.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why? I feel this assignment best addresses my civic literacy and engagement, self-directional skills, communication skills, and information skills.
21st Century Skills: This assignment is the perfect example of civic literacy and engagement because I am teaching my community how to vote and preparing them by registering them and introducing them to our candidates. I developed this skill by seeing what students know, this way I can see what is most important for them to learn next. I can use this not only in future learning, but in a variety of real-world applications. This assignment as a whole will teach me to be a more educated voter.
This assignment also shows self directional skills because I had to reach out to peers in order to get their feedback. I also needed to design the cards and schedule the meetings. I feel I improved upon my self directional skills by working to make time for all of these components. I often end up doing things in the moment and not taking proper preparation time, which was required in this because I needed to reach out and have enough time to plan the meeting then analyze the answers before the due date. This is probably one of the most important 21st century skills for me right now since I am taking online classes and need to properly manage my time. This will be great in the future as well because as an adult I will be the only one responsible for planning out my life.
This project also showed to be a great example of communication skills because I had to work with my peers to find meeting times and have a productive, professional conversation with them. I am actively improving this skill by getting to turn this interview type question set into a friendly conversation. This will be super helpful regardless of the jobs I get and is even helpful in my current job.
The final 21st century skill I had picked for this assignment was information skills. The last step to this assignment will be analyzing our findings and using them to better our projects. Using this, I can make my information as useful and accessible as possible, I will also be able to find what the kids most feel they need to learn. This allows me to develop my information skills by getting to take the information I have and apply it towards my project. This as a great tool to have in the real world for all sorts of tasks and activities, but will be especially useful in college.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why? I am most proud of my reaching out to others and getting a chance to lead the conversation, even is it is by following the method cards. It is not something I’m used to doing so it feels like a good step out of my comfort zone.
What was most difficult about completing this task? I would say the most difficult part of completing this task was getting all of the dates solidified in accordance with both of our schedules and the deadlines for the assignment.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do different? I feel like its still too early in the process to come up with things to change. I do wish my people were more interested in talking about it, but if that’s my target demographic, that is who I should be interviewing.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past? This gives me an opportunity to use the speaking skill I have already worked on over the past few years. I can also use connections I have made in the college to learn some more about voting.
