Name of Assignment: Junior Project Subject: Junior Seminar Facilitator/Teacher: Ms. Lindsey, Mr. Adam, Mrs. Alexander, & Ms. Wilson
Description of Work/Assignment: For my junior project I got to choose almost anything that would have a positive impact on my community, I chose to take Kihei Charter's first grade class on a field trip.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why? I feel this took Financial, Economic, & Business Literacy for multiple reasons. There was a small period of time where Ms. Wilson thought it could be more beneficial if I raised money for Kihei Charter to purchase or rent a school bus rather than using vans or renting public buses for field trips. This ended up being much too large of a project for any one student to accomplish so I went back to my original plan, which still involved having to see if students, school, or organizations would pay for field trips and how much.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why? I am most proud of staying on task for this assignment. It has been very difficult to work with the teacher to organize the field trip because we are both very busy as well as getting responses from organizations.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment? I improved upon my Financial, Economic, & Business Literacy by starting to understand the worth of a dollar. As a high schooler who does not have much spare time for a job, I still have just a brief understanding of money, but after getting a quote for the school bus, I was surprised to see it would cost $80,000 for the 2021-2022 school year.
What was most difficult about completing this task? The most difficult part about completing this task is making and keeping a schedule. I am also hearing many of my peers and teachers talk about how it has been hard for other students as well to be given this much independence.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do different? If I were to restart this project, I wold set my expectations higher and give myself a tighter schedule because I probably could have taken two classes on field trips now knowing what this project entails.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past? This project does not relate to learning at school, but gives me a reminder to how much field trips kept me engaged in my learning and how much they made me enjoy school, so I hope this works for another kid now.
How can you apply this to future learning? I can apply this to my future in and out of school because I practiced self-pacing as well as organizing events and working with money.
